Why Myanmar
Banks that stall, a rate nobody trusts, and communities that organise anyway.
Why Myanmar? Why now? Why $2?
Since the 2021 coup, Myanmar's banks have become a chokepoint. Wires stall, accounts freeze, and the official exchange rate is set by the military's central bank, not by what a dollar actually buys.
Dollars that reach the collectives directly are converted at the real market rate, then spent on the ground with local tailors, cooks and drivers. That is why a small gift goes a long way.
It does not make life cheap. Prices have climbed as the kyat has fallen. It just means your $2 isn't eaten by a rate nobody trusts.
$2 is about 4,200 Ks at the official rate and about 7,200 to 7,700 Ks at the market rate.
